Drumheller could soon have another new housing subdivision.![]()

Town council has given first reading to bylaws to rezone and create a new area structure plan for the playing fields at the old St. Anthony's School site on 7 Ave, SE between 12 St. and 14 St.
"I saw the plan (and) it looks really good; I know there was a concern before (when) they were talking about R2 (multi-unit residential), but this is R1 (single family homes) that they're proposing," said mayor Terry Yemen. "You could build on a slab or with a basement optional; we're trying to sell ourselves as a retirement community (and) those options, I think, would fit in very well."
"When you look at the cost of housing in Calgary it's pretty attractive to be able to sell your house in Calgary, move to Drumheller, buy a brand new home and you still have an incredible amount of money that you'd be able to put in the bank," he continued.
The development, which covers the playground, but not the old school building, was created in 2013 through a division of the old St. Anthony's property into two parcels. It would eventually contain 14 single family homes.
A public hearing will be held on February 8 to give people a look at the proposal before it goes back to town council for second and third readings.
The town is also opening the Hillsview 2 subdivision with developer Stevenson Homes. An auction of the town's 19 building lots is expected in late February or early March.
