There's a report of a local woman hanging around stores and restaurants in Drumheller, conning people into giving her money.

The initial details came up on the Drumheller and Area Discussion and Information Page on Facebook. A post claims the woman has been telling people she needs money to get to Calgary or Thunder Bay for medical attention. The post adds she's been barred from Freson Bros for solicitation.

"In terms of anybody having reported anything to police, at least during the month of December, we didn't get any reports of anybody trying to defraud people or panhandling," said Drumheller RCMP Staff Sergeant Grant MacDonald.

The woman is described to be in her late 40's to early 50's and stands about 5'10" with brown hair, heavier set, and sometimes wears glasses.

The General Store on North Dinosaur Trail had a great Christmas.

Their second holiday season at the Dinosaur Trail location was loads busier than the first.

"I think we offer a wide array of very unique products, we have stuff that you don't find anywhere else in Drumheller, as well as tough to find in Calgary," employee Pam Hartman explained.

Hartman added she's very excited to see people shopping local, and supporting the small businesses.

"We're the little people in the community, that are trying to make a go of business and we want the support of people here in Drumheller."

Another big draw of the small shop is their specialty coffee and teas.

The General Store is located next to the Homestead Antique Museum.

Farm Safety Bill concerns local MLA

With 2016 well underway, people in the farm community are still trying to figure out what the Alberta Government's latest legislation means for them.

Bill 6. the Farm Safety Bill, became law on January 1, subjecting farms and ranches to Occupational Health and Safety rules and making it mandatory for operations with paid employees to carry workers compensation (WCB) coverage.

"As of January 1, the requirement for WCB legislation is there," reports Rick Strankman, the MLA for Drumheller-Stettler and the agriculture critic for the opposition Wildrose Party. "The OH&S (Occupational Health and Safety) requirements are going to be meted out in the next 17-24 months is what I've been told."

"It's so onerous on producers going forward and the potential costs of it are going to be excessive," argued Strankman, who operates a grain farm near Altario, just this side of the Alberta-Saskatchewan boundary. He also questions how many lives it will save, noting the most recent farm fatality was an owner-operator killed near Consort when a propane tank attached to the torch he was using exploded. However, the biggest problem, he maintains is the lack of communication with farmers.

"We have an email from a gentleman in Linden commenting that some of his emails were not received by government email addresses," he told 99.5 Drum FM. "It seems like they're full or blocked or stopped, so it's greatly frustrating that the government wants to invoke legislation, but not listen to Albertans."

Strankman is asking anyone with questions or stories about the Farm Safety Bill or other Alberta Government legislation to contact him at one of his riding offices in Stettler, Hanna or Drumheller.

Part of a Budweiser commercial was filmed in Starland County.

“Somewhat depressingly, they picked our area because it represented the Arctic,” laughed CAO Ross Rawlusyk.

Details are scarce, but the storyboard was to include a 30 foot tall Budweiser goal light and a shot of a local highway. Rawlusyk mentioned they may be shooting in a variety of locations.

A glimpse of Drumheller can be seen in 'The Revenant' starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Tom Hardy. The area was also recently used for the HBO series 'Lewis and Clark.'

Another movie will be crediting the Drumheller Valley as its scenery.

'Don't Walk Among the Dead' is the latest short film to shoot at the Graham Ranch.

"It's about two sisters and a stranger, who meet in that at-war situation and how they have to make choices for their survival," Satinder Kassoana, director of the film, explained.

He added the movie is set in a post-apocalyptic time, and has a zombie background, but is not about the zombies themselves.

Kassoana was scouting for film locations when he stumbled upon a wooden cabin on John Barry Graham's property, and later agreed on the location with producer and lead actor Julian Black Antelope.

"I wrote my story about that cabin."

Shooting for the short wrapped on January 10, the film will be shown on the Telus Video on Demand Network by February 15, and on YouTube soon after.

Kassoana added he was thankful for the cast and crew he worked with throughout the cold shooting days.

New cases spark flu vaccination reminder

Alberta Health Service (AHS) is reminding people to start the new year off with a shot in the arm -- literally.

"In the last week we have seen a significant increase in cases and some hospitalizations and, unfortunately, some deaths," reported Dr. Digby Horne, medical officer of health for AHS Central Zone. "I don't know that it's extra severe, there always are deaths due to influenza every year."

The weekly influenza update for January 14 reports five Albertans died from the disease in the previous week, two in the Calgary Zone and three more in and around Edmonton. Four of the victims were not immunized while the fifth, a child, had received just one of two vaccinations required for children under nine.

"The vaccine itself is not 100 per cent effective, it's about 60-80 per cent effective in otherwise healthy adults," admitted Dr. Horne. "In seniors, that effectiveness drops by about half, so 30-40 per cent effective."

That said, he recommends that every person who is eligible to receive a free vaccination take advantage of the offer.

"It is recommended for everyone in Alberta who is more than six months of age," Dr. Horne told 99.5 Drum FM. "It's available, so that's what we're recommending is that everyone take advantage of that."

More than two million doses of influenza vaccine were purchased for use in Alberta this winter. As of the latest report, only about half of those had been used up.

Drumheller Mounties are looking for a suspect after an alleged sexual assault at a local apartment.

A police report says around 10:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 10, an unknown man knocked on the male victim's door and asked to use the phone. When the victim opened the door, the suspect forced his way into the victim's apartment and sexually assaulted him. The victim received minor injuries and was not transported to hospital.

RCMP said their investigation has revealed the same suspect had knocked on other apartment doors in the area and asked to use the phone in the days leading up to the assault. None of the residents of those apartments were attacked.

Police are urging people to verify the identity of any strangers before opening the door of their home to someone they do not know.

The sexual assault suspect is described as about 5'10" (178 cm) tall. He was wearing blue jeans, a green sweater and a light blue ball cap. He also wore a black balaclava to cover his face.

Valley churches unite this weekend

The Drumheller Valley's churches get together this weekend at the Badlands Community Facility (BCF) for their annual Unity Service of prayer and worship.

"This has been going on for quite a number of years now, and it's open to anybody,' said pastor, Brent Rushinka. "There's people in town who are Christian, but they don't attend a church, so this is a good place to come and worship together."

The Drumheller Christian Ministerial Association used to rotate the host church from year to year, but Rushinka told 99.5 Drum FM that changed once the BCF was open.

"We like to have a neutral spot, but also when we've met at the BCF the past two years, we take a free will offering and anything outside of our expenses, we usually give to the operating expenses of the Badlands Community Facility (and) we also give some to either the Salvation Army Food Bank or the Passion Play."

Sunday's service gets underway at 6:00 p.m. upstairs at the BCF and should last about 90 minutes.

"It's going to be a very low key service, it's not going to be traditional church or high church," explained Rushinka. "It's going to be singing songs together, praying together and listening to some scripture, no sermon, no traditional format, but some very good music."

The theme for this year's Unity Service is Declaring the mighty works of God.

Since the distracted driving legislation was introduced in September of 2011, there has been 87,633 convictions, 97 per cent of those were a driver using a handheld electronic device.

As of January 1, 2016, a three demerit consequence was added to the $287 fine.

“Now with the additional three point demerits, we’ve noticed so far that there seems to be a bit of a difference in compliance with the legislation,” Staff Sergeant of the Drumheller RCMP Grant MacDonald explained.

Male drivers accounted for two-thirds of all distracted driving convictions, mainly among drivers 22-34 years of age.

Drumheller RCMP are reminding the public to keep their eyes on the road.

Starland County demands more open Alberta government

An area municipality has joined the growing list of Albertans unhappy with the way things are being run at the provincial level.

Starland County passed a resolution at its last council meeting asking the Alberta Association of Municipal Districts and Counties (AAMDC) to enter the fray.

"That the AAMDC lobby the government to enact a legislative requirement that all delegated legislation, including regulations, orders in council, ministerial orders or codes or codes of practice that are essential to the implementation of that new or amending legislation, have to be submitted for review to the public and the legislature before final reading," outlined Starland CAO, Ross Rawlusyk.

"In our mind, at least the citizens of Alberta would have a chance to see what that legislation looks like in total before it comes into law," he explained. "(And) the guys that are voting on it (MLA's) would actually know what the heck they're voting for."

The Starland County resolution says when a new law is passed, the devil is in the details and Rawlusyk believes the current system of passing a law before giving the exact wording circumvents the democratic process.

"It's fine to pass a bill and then say to the minister of municipal affairs 'Oh yeah, well you can make regulations, buddy,' but the guys that are making that law really don't have a clue what the regulation's going to say or be or how it will be implemented," he told 99.5 Drum FM. "Even then, we're seeing that there's no actual oversight on how those regulations are approved and developed."

Kneehill County, which neighbors Starland on the west, has seconded the resolution to the AAMDC. The organization's spring convention is scheduled for March 14-16, 2016 in Edmonton.

Fire victims looked after

It looks like the public response has been more than enought to handle the immediate needs of some Drumheller families forced out of their homes by a fire in Bankview earlier this month.

Flames broke out in a fourplex in the 700-Block of 4 St, SW just after midnight on the morning of January 8. By the time fire crews got things under control, one suite was completely gutted, while the other three suffered smoke and water damage to the point where they are not liveable.

A relief campaign was launched by Century 21 Real Estate in Drumheller, but Kim Suntjens says they haven't been all that busy.

"Only one family is kind of looking for something," she told 99.5 Drum FM. "They were looking for a laptop, but I have been in contact with Reality Bytes and John (Shoff) is going to help me out with that."

"They contacted me on the weekend and they asked if I knew of any wardrobes or clothing racks," she added. "I've checked my list and I don't have anything, but I'll probably just end up going out and getting them some."

While the relief effort appears at first to be bigger than the need, Suntjens cautions that could change.

"The one family has just moved in with another family, they're just in a bedroom," she noted. "One of the other families has got a transfer out of town and the other two, we haven't really heard from."

A fundraiser at Sandstone Lanes bowling alley in Drumheller on January 13 raised $767.40, which was put into a fund for the fire victims at the local ATB Financial branch.

The library in Drumheller Valley Secondary School has quite the large display on one of its walls.

DVSS Connections is an extra-curricular course based off leadership, cultural diversity and environmental stewardship. Their final project is now complete.

The Tree of Virtues is a giant mural painting involving a large portion of the student body.

"In the tree, these are all virtues, which the group picked from about 80 different words. The main ones are acceptance, compassion, humbleness, gratitude and love," said grade 11 student Laressa Ngoeun, who spoke on behalf of Connections.

The Connections program provides students with an immersion opportunity which fosters a better understanding of the multicultural and diverse nature of our school and our society.

It has three parts: pre-trip assignments, then a leadership camp at Kamp Kiwanis and final project, which was the tree.

The program also brought in a speaker, Alison Springer from Young Women in Power, sponsored by the Town of Drumheller's Family and Community Support Services.

"We had over 200 blossoms and after our presentation with Alison Springer we had each student come down and write a pozitive affirmation about themselves onto each blossom," added Ngoeun.

She thanked Jamie O'Brien, Image Crafter Signs, ATB Financial and the Town of Drumheller.

ATB is selling calendars in the branch for $10 to raise needed money for the project with all funds going to DVSS Connections program.
