Golden Hills deals with controversial equality bill

School boards and administrators around the province are scrambling to make sure their policies align with a government bill supporting diversity in schools.

Bill 10 would allow gay-straight alliances to be created at any Alberta schools where the students request them.

"I think in some ways there's been a lot of negative about what this could look like or might look like," commented Golden Hills School Division (GHSD) superintendent, Bevan Daverne. "I think that the conversations we're having, many people have found to be reassuring."

Daverne and other admininistration from the school division office in Strathmore are touring division schools to explain their draft policy.

"Certainly the LGBTQ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans-gender or questioning) is one (issue), but there's also lots of other things too," he told 99.5 Drum FM. "We have minority groups, we have students that have mental health challenges, we have students that have issues around their own view of their bodies, so we need to be able to support kids in lots of different ways."

Daverne has already met with parents of children at Acme and Standard Schools. He's scheduled to be at Strathmore High this evening (Mar. 3) at 7:00 p.m. Further parent meetings are planned for Three Hills and DVSS in Drumheller on March 7 and 8 respectively.

"(I want) what's going to be best for all of our students, what's going to be best to support that particular student and to have an approach that also involves family and parents, to work through something that everybody can feel comfortable with."

A schedule of the GHSD Bill 10 community meetings, along with the school division's draft policy, can be found here.

Most of Three Hills will be without power on Friday morning, according to ATCO Electric.

Crews will be making repairs resulting from a 2015 frost storm.

"There were some things that developed during the frost storm in December, and we have an opportunity now to coordinate some longer term repairs with some other maintenance that was needed, so they'll do it all at the same time," explained customer service supervisor with ATCO Electric Sylvia Adams.

The power outage will happen between 9:00 a.m. and noon on March 4 with affected customers being notified with an automated phone message.

Anyone with questions or concerns about the power outage can call the ATCO call centre at 1-800-668-5506

There's the Canadian Rockies and the Canadian Badlands, but what about Highway 27? A number of municipalities along the popular east-west travel corridor are banding together to promote the area as a tourist attraction.

"One of the initiatives that we keep looking at around Kneehill County is tourism," explained county reeve, Bob Long. "We have identified that as one of our strategic goals; we think that there's lots of places that people would come out to see."

Long noted the geography of the region, which is kind of midway between the Rockies and the Badlands and said 27 different tourist initiatives have been identified for the 150 kilometre long stretch of road.

"There's work going on within the Canadian Badlands to re-identify the Drumheller Dinosaur Trail, trying to tie Drumheller into Dinosaur Provincial Park," he told 99.5 Drum FM. "This will bring people and tie into that effort as well."

Right now, the partners are Mountain View and Kneehill Counties, the Olds Institution, Sundre, Three Hills and Trochu. Each will contribute $4,000.

"I guess the future of anything is about collaboration, right?," asked Long. "I think it's a win-win."

Dollarama has recalled their Wooden Easy-Grab Puzzles, according to Health Canada.

Three piece puzzles depict various animals (farm, garden, ocean and jungle animals themes) and have wooden knobs.

The wooden knobs may separate from the puzzle pieces, posing a choking hazard to young children.

Dollarama has received one report of a knob detaching from a puzzle piece, with no reported injuries.

The products are intended for children 24 months and older and can be identified by item #08-3032698 and UPC 6 67888 17495 9.

Puzzle pieces showing the end of a metallic peg on the underside are not included in this recall.

Consumers can find information on how to choose safe toys and protect their children when they play by visiting the general toy safety tips page on the Healthy Canadians website.

Approximately 23,952 of the recalled puzzles were sold in Canada. The recalled puzzles were sold from June 2015 to January 2016 in Dollarama stores across Canada.

Consumers should immediately take the recalled puzzle away from children and return to the store to obtain a refund (no receipt required).

Training money for Hanna area fire departments

A number of fire departments in east central Alberta will be able to do some more training thanks to a grant from Alberta Municipal Affairs.

The East Central Emergency Training Partnership, which includes Hanna, Oyen, Consort, the Special Areas and the MD of Acadia, get's $30,000 from the Fire Services Emergency Preparedness Program.

"In 2005 the province first started grants that were available for regional training groups," explained Hanna fire chief, David Mohl. "At that time we formed a regional training group in our area to do basic firefighting courses."

"Doing so much regional training together, you get all the expertise from the different departments," he added. "Just because something was working really good here in Hanna doesn't mean that Oyen maybe didn't have something a little better, so you get different perpectives from different departments."

Mohl thinks the latest grant could fund six or seven regional training courses.

"It's not just structural firefighting that the courses do," he cautioned. They also cover rescues, motor vehicle training for cutting up cars, lots of different training included in this, not just fire."

Wheatland County gets $19,500 from the same program for regional fire training, plus another $1,000 to help train for emergencies.

Alberta Health Services sees increase in flu cases

Alberta Health Services has released their weekly stats regarding influenza numbers.

TheCcentral Zone, which includes Drumheller, has 407 confirmed cases of influenza.

"The past two to three weeks more and more cases of influenza have sprung up," noted medical officer of health for the Central Zone, Dr. Ifeoma Achebe.

In addition to the new cases of flu, 67 central Albertans have been admitted to the hospital. At this point it's too early to tell if these numbers are higher or lower than 2015.

"We can't say for sure now, because we're still in the season. So, that question would be best tackled after the season when we look at this years numbers and then compare with the previous years numbers," said Dr. Achebe.

Influenza A seems to be more prevalent this season than B, which is similar to 2015.

Due to the higher flu numbers this year, Dr. Achebe encourages getting the flu shot.

"The vaccine contains both influenza A and B and, so, if you get the vaccine you're protected against both strains, and the vaccine, by the way, is still available for people who haven't had it," explained Dr. Achebe.

The good news is there have been no reported deaths from the flu in the central zone.

Country group Hey Romeo, which includes Drumheller's Rob Shapiro, will be part of the Juno Award celebrations this year.

The group (Stacie Roper, Darren Gusnowsky, and Shapiro) will play JUNOfest in Calgary on April 1 at Ranchman's Cookhouse and Dancehall after Maddison Krebs, The Dungarees, and Standard's Drew Gregory.

"We're gonna play the hits, play the songs people know and cram in a few of our own, said keyboardist Rob Shapiro. "It'll be fun, we'll do a bunch of our stuff from our five albums, I guess we have now, and sprinkle in a couple covers that we do."

Hey Romeo released a new album in September entitled 'Ride With Me,' which is also the name of their latest single.

"Darren is featured on the song, he's singing it, and it's his first time singing a single, so that's a big deal for us. Stacie and him are still getting along. They're sharing the microphone," joked Shapiro.

While the new album was co-written in Nashville, the group stayed true to their Alberta roots and recorded it all in Calgary.

"This one we recorded entirely up here, which we haven't done since our very first album in 2006. So, we recorded it at MCC Recording Studios in Calgary, actually, with a guy named Johnny Gasparic and Dave Temple, so two really good guys, and we put in the extra work and extra time and it was a lot of fun," beamed Shapiro.

'Ride With Me' is now available on iTunes.

Hey Romeo will take to the JUNOfest stage at 11:00 p.m. on Friday, April 1. The Juno's will be handed out on April 3 starting at 5:00 p.m in Calgary.

A Hanna family whose two-year-old son is undergoing treatment for cancer have a lot of people to thank these days and two of them work at the town's ATB Financial branch.

Deneen Anderson and Kandi Rose spearheaded Hearts for Howells, which started as a silent auction within the branch and spread to an online Facebook auction to raise money for the family of Zachary Howell, who is undergoing chemo and radiation therapy for a tumour in his sinuses and cancer in his lungs.

"We were overwhelmed by the support and the participation we received from local people and people from around that found out on Facebook," said Anderson. "We had people bidding from Hanna, Youngstown, Drumheller, Oyen, Acadia Valley, Brooks, Medicine Hat."

"Every weekend would come up and me and Kandi would kind of discuss it and, you know what, we need some new items on there, so we would go shopping," she recalled. "It was so exciting to sit at the computer and hear the dings of notifications of people bidding and some of the bidding wars that were happening, it was just awesome."

They are not releasing the dollar figure raised through the auction, but Anderson admits they were overjoyed with the result.

"Online we had over 100 (items), I think there was about 115 and in branch we had 25," she told 99.5 Drum FM. "A lot of those items were donated, some of them were from Elevate Auctions in the city (Calgary) and a lot of them Kandi and I supplied."

Zach Howell is currently staying at the Ronald McDonald House in Calgary with mom, Rachel. Father Joey is back to work at Super A Foods in Hanna.

Ruling on physician-assisted death

The Supreme Court of Canada recently made a landmark ruling on doctor-assisted death in the country.

Terminally ill patients will have the option of ending their life.

"By June 4 the Supreme Court of Canada will provide the federal government the ability to provide legislation by June 4 that would allow physician-assisted death for patients that meet the specific criteria," noted the Acting Chief Medical Officer and Vice President of Quality for Alberta Health Services, Dr. Francois Belanger.

Currently physician-assisted death legislation is not in effect, however the Supreme Court has put an appeal process in place for people wanting seek a doctor assisted death.

"They have to go through the provinicial court system for the appeal process to get a directive that would direct the physician to perform a physician-assisted death," explained Dr. Belanger. "At this point in time, (we're) talking about an exception basis. When the legislation comes into effect June 4, than it'll be done as part of the legislative requirement."

It's a little early to know what the conditions will be, but it's expected that physician-assisted deaths will be closely monitored.

"We don't know what the legislation is going to say, but likely that's going to be the case. There's been a report that's been released this week by a federal all party panel with 23 recommendations, and that gives you bit of an idea of where things are going to go," stated Dr. Belanger.

Dr. Belanger adds an interim directive has been put in place for doctors who do not want to perform an assisted death for moral or ethical reasons which would allow them to refer an individual to a doctor who will perform the task.

Physician-assisted death is for adults only who must be competent, clearly consents to the termination of life and has a terminal illness which will cause intolerable suffering.

More information about physician-assisted death can be found on the Alberta Health Services website.

It's not often someone wins a $52,000 car at a Drumheller Dragons game, but it happened Saturday night (Mar. 5).

Ernest Buchfink of Hanna is the winner of the car. It was raffled off at the Dragons game, March 5 at the Memorial Arena.

10 finalists were named during the game, and following the final buzzer, they all went on the ice. Each was given a fob, with one of them matching the car.

One-by-one, the finalists pressed their fobs, and on the 8th contestant, the horn sounded.

Buchfink was not in attendance, so Dragons' forward Matt Muzyka represented him.

"We had a lot of people selling tickets and backing it," said head coach and general manager, Brian Curran.

"I think it's only got about 1,700 kilometres on it. That's a pretty sharp car, I wouldn't mind driving it around if I had one."

Tickets for the raffle were $100.

Kaleidoscope Theatre at DVSS could be full this evening as one of the world's foremost authors on international affairs comes to town.

Military historian, Dr. Gwynne Dyer will talk about his new book.

"He is wonderfully, if not entirely objective, at least gives a perspective that seems more rational than most," argues DVSS teacher, Andrew Berdahl. "He's going to talk about...'Don't Panic: ISIS, Terrorism and Today's Middle East.'"

It's a joint presentation of DVSS and the Friends of DVSS Society and so there is no admission charge for Dr. Dyer's lecture, something that Berdahl hopes will attract a large audience tonight.

"Well, I hope so; it's a little hard to tell who's getting the message," he told 99.5 Drum FM. "I suspect there are significant numbers of people who would be interested, but it's not always easy to reach them."

Gwynne Dyer's free lecture is scheduled to get underway at 7:00 p.m. at Kaleidoscope Theatre at the south end of DVSS. The doors open at 6:30.

Plans are getting off the ground this spring in Drumheller to put a group of local teens on the road to the Rocky Mountains this summer.

The Two Wheel View Badlands to Banff bike trip will help participants learn about the country and themselves from the seat of a bicycle.

"This is our fourth annual, it's going to take place August 2 to August 12 and it's for local teens aged 14 to 17," said RCMP Constable Craig Nelson, who is helping to organize things again this year.

"Every teen that has gone on the trip has said that they loved it, found it very worthwhile and some even said it's been life changing for them," he continued. "There's a bit of a cost ($950), but we do fundraising and usually the cost to the parents is almost nothing, kids don't have to be in exceptional shape (and) we provide all the equipment as well."

They will be making presentations at both Drumheller junior-senior high schools, they will have a booth at the Sports and Recreation Expo at the Badlands Community Facility (BCF) on March 16 and they will hold an information night at the BCF on March 22 starting at 7:00 p.m.

"I'm in contact with a lot of our participants and past participants," recalled Nelson. "Always big smiles, 'Oh, do you remember the time we did this and did that on the trip?' It's definitely really, really cool."

Another area musician will be taking to the stage during Juno week in Calgary.

Drew Gregory of Standard will play JUNOfest on April 1 just before Hey Romeo at Ranchmans Cookhouse and Dancehall.

"This just kind of came in for us, this was a last minute thing so we had been looking around and seeing what we could do with the Juno's, of course, being in Calgary," said Gregory.

2016 is off to a great start for Drew Gregory after being nominated for two Alberta Country Music Awards and winning Male Artist of the Year in January.

"That was quite the surprise. I'll be honest with you I wasn't expecting it all. My manager ended up winning industry person of the year, Angie Morris, (who) does great work with a ton of artists," beamed Gregory.

In addition to being named Male Artist of the Year, Gregory is also a new father to a healthy baby boy, named Ty.

"He's doing awesome. He's so funny, he's just starting to really smile and getting those facial expressions," smiled Gregory.

Gregory is also getting ready to release a new album this month. The album was partially written in Nashville but  most of of was done in Alberta and recorded at Jason Berry's studio in Ontario. For anybody who follows country music closely, Jason Berry is Dean Brody's guitar player.

"Did a lot of work with him bringing all the songs to life. Great band, it was mostly Dean Brody's band that was playing on it (and) a great bunch of guys," said Gregory.

The new album will be a little heavier than his last one with more of a rock influence to it. He'll be hosting a CD release party on March 24 at Century Casino in Calgary with tickets being available online.

Drew Gregory will take to the stage at approximately 9:00 p.m.

Drumheller's newest neighborhood is growing in popularity.

Hillsview Estates Phase 2, which is the continuation of 10th ave SE, has recently seen a lot of additions, including new street lights and new homes.

"We've got four homes all framed and two of them are near completion," stated Gary Chambers of Century 21. "We've got another two homes going in and we're actually just starting to dig a basement for a pre-sold."

For anybody thinking of purchasing a new home in the neighborhood, an investment seminar will be held next week to provide information on financing plans for the Hillsview Estates Phase 2 subdivision.

"It's an open door seminar so anyone is welcome to show up and go through this," explained Chambers. "We think it's a good offering for people who are diversifying their investment, for first time buyers (and) for parents who are looking. We've had a good amount of interest from parents trying to get kids started in their first starter home."

The information session will also explain the 0 per cent interest mortgage program that ATB Financial is offering exclusively for the neighborhood.

"Basically those mortgages allow people to get into these new homes at, sort of, a starter home price," noted Chambers.

The Hillsview Estates Phase 2 Investment Seminar will be happening at the Badlands Community Facility on Tuesday, March 15 in the large multi-purpose room from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

Provincial petitions ready for Legislature unveiling

This Tuesday, March 8 is D-Day for a group of Albertans upset with the way the provincial government has been running things for the last year.

The group Albertans First has been collecting signatures on petitions protesting the way the government has moved ahead with things like Occupational Health and Safety rules on farms and ranches and a proposed carbon tax for the oil and gas industry.

"There are boxes and boxes and boxes full of them," explained local organizer Deb Wynia. "They are going to the Legislature along with a lot of people, we're trying to encourage as many as we can. There are buses going from all over Alberta."

"We couldn't get one for Drumheller because we couldn't get enough commitments with people working and so on," she admitted. "There is one that some of us are going on that's coming from Hanna; it's full now, but there is room on a bus from Stettler."

The petitions are to be presented in the Alberta Legislature and a rally is planned in front of the building at 12:00 p.m.

"What we want to do is restore participatory democracy to Alberta," said Wynia. "We feel the government is not representing a lot of the people; the people are the ones who vote our government in and they seem to be more and more not listening to what people have to say, just pushing through their own agenda."

If you would like a seat on the bus leaving Stettler for the Legislature on Tuesday, call (403) 742-2707.
